Wednesday, December 1 difrent presents Next World Party Hosted by STEPHAN SAID and featuring MORLEY, THE MAST with HAALE, THE PEACE POETS and GENESIS BE File Under: World, Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Hip Hop Doors at 7:00pm, Show at 8:00pm $15 Internationally acclaimed artist and global justice activist Stephan Said joins forces with difrent: and Amnesty International student groups for a "Next World Party" that brings hip-hop, balkan, gypsy, rock, and pop together in 'a sound united' guaranteed to crush borders with infectious rhythms of change. Joining him are world-renowned singer Morley, The Mast, featuring Iranian-American artist Haale, a genre bursting all-star band with horn legends Art Baron, Earl Gardner, Steve Elson, Marcus Rojas, Kevin Hunter, George Mitchell, Yousif Sheronick and upcoming socially conscious hip-hop by The Peace Poets collective and Genesis Be. The concert marks World Aids Day and the kick-off of Amnesty International's Write For Rights Global Write-A-Thon. Demanding that the rights of individuals are respected, protected, and fulfilled, the Write For Rights Global Write-A-Thon is the world's largest letter writing event: showing solidarity to those who suffer from human rights abuses all around the globe, Amnesty International is encouraging human right activists to partake in this writing marathon highlighting twelve individual cases.

Hodge has spent his youthful career transcending between various styles of Hip-Hop, Gospel, R&B, Funk, Singer/Songwriter and Jazz, performing and/or recording with Grammy Nominated and Awarded artists such as Maxwell, Common, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Timbaland, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Bilal,Gerald Levert, Kanye West, Andre 3000, Sade, Terence Blanchard, Mulgrew Miller, Clark Terry, Donald Byrd, and many more. In 2008, he was commissioned to write a piece by the Chicago Symphony entitled "Infinite Reflections", and was selected to be a part of the Sundance Composer Lab. Currently, he serves as the Musical Director for Maxwell, while maintaining a steady career as a film composer and performing as a solo artist in front of sold out crowds at such venues as Summerstage and The Blue Note Jazz Club.

His music manages to merge genres and create something truly unique and soulful. Take some of the best musicians in NYC backing a singer/composer with respect for tradition; add afro-cuban rhythm and you might start to get the idea of what it's about. An artist from head to toe that in his incipient career has already had the joy of playing with artist such as Alejandro Sanz at the Madison Square Garden, RDB at the Latin Grammy's, the ex Yerba Buena Pedro Martinez, the Grammy award winner and jazz trumpeter Brian Lynch as well as the acclaimed Curtis Brothers among others.
Saturday, December 11 PHILLYBLOCO Dance Party File Under: Samba, Funk, Reggae, Dance Doors at 7:00pm, Show at 8:00pm $10 Experience the joy and excitement of the PhillyBloco Dance Party! PhillyBloco's 20+ members perform a raucous mash-up of Samba, Funk, Reggae and more, all set to the infectious drumming of Brazilian Carnival. PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. The group is comprised of thirteen drummers, electric and bass guitar, vocals, a full brass section, accordion and accompanying Brazilian Dancers. The group performs a diverse repertoire made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive elements used to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying the band's own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement. The music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. Their goal is to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate.

Thursday, December 16 FAHIR ATAKOĞLU Featuring bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez File Under: Jazz, World Doors at 8:00pm, Show at 9:00pm $25 adv, $30 at door International jazz composer and pianist Fahir Atakoğlu will be performing at Drom in support of his latest CD, Faces & Places—which has reached #1 on the JazzWeek World Music Charts. Fahir will be joined by the internationally renowned musicians bassist Anthony Jackson and Cuban drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez. Born in Istanbul, award-winning composer and pianist Fahir Atakoğlu is well known for his ambitious symphonic works and music for film. He has composed music for many of Turkey’s top musicians, and earned a loyal international following through the release of eighteen albums, including the critically acclaimed Istanbul in Blue (2008), and his latest release Faces & Places (2009), both featuring jazz/rock fusion with traditional Turkish influences. Employing unique rhythmic, melodic and harmonic sensitivities, Atakoğlu’s music reflects his many different cultural influences, which combine to create compositions with striking originality that still play in tune with the culture of his motherland.
Thursday, December 23 SANDA WEIGL File Under: Gypsy, Jazz, Cabaret Doors at 8:00pm, Show at 9:00pm $10 Sanda Weigl was born in Romania and began her musical career in a state-sponsored East German rock band called Team 4. As a teenager in 1968, she was jailed for subversive actions against the communist regime, then forced to work in a labor camp, then kicked out of East Germany completely. And that's just one chapter. Today, she lives up to her nickname — the Downtown Gypsy Queen of New York — singing in cabarets across the U.S. as part of a Romanian cultural outreach campaign. She says that her current touring band, an all-Japanese trio simply called Band, plays Romanian gypsy music better than most Romanian musicians today.
Friday, December 24 DEMIR DEMIRKAN File Under: Turkish, Rock, World Doors at 9:30pm, Show at 10:00pm $25 adv, $30 at door Demir Demirkan joined Istanbul heavy rock band Pentagram as songwriter and guitarist. In 1992, he studied at Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles with Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, and MI founder Paul Hanson. In 2000, Demir released his eponymous initial solo album with Sony Music. His albums "Dunya Benim" (The World is Mine) and "Istanbul2004". The latter was sold in 11 European countries after his successful tour with Mike Tramp (Whitelion). The songs Demir wrote for Sertab Erener were widely accepted in Europe and Turkey. One of these songs, “Every Way That I Can,” won the first prize in the 2003 Eurovision Song Competition and sold 400,000 units worldwide. Demir Demirkan also wrote television jingles and composed soundtracks for television and films. One of the more remarkable works of Demir Demirkan was the music he composed for the documentary about Gallipoli/Gelibolu in 2005. That soundtrack involved ethnical strings recorded in Turkey and classical melodies recorded by a symphonic orchestra and choir in the Czech Republic. It was released in Turkey and Australia. Demir Demirkan and Sertab Erener embarked on the international project Painted on Water together. This innovative work entitled Ebru was co-produced by Demir and Jay Newland, a multi- Grammy-winning-producer (Norah Jones’ “Come Away with Me”).
