On Saturday evening July 9th at 7:30 PM, pianist extraordinaire, Carli Muñoz, accompanied by master contrabassist Eddie Gomez and virtuosic percussionist Felipe Fournier on cajón-set will enrapture guests with a rare, no-holds-barred performance divided into a combination of driving duet as well as a full trio. The trio will converge from their respective off-continent gigs exclusively for DROM –a magical evening not to be missed (one set only).
Pianist, composer and leader Carli Muñoz, has been involved in the music industry for over forty years in PR and on both coasts of the United States. He's recorded and/or performed with artists as diverse as Wilson Pickett, The Beach Boys (11 years), George Benson, Marian McPartland, Joe Chambers, Charles Lloyd, Chico Hamilton, Chris Potter and Les McCann to name a few luminaries.
Munoz also operates a successful jazz dinner club in Old San Juan called Carli’s Fine Bistro & Piano. In addition to supporting touring artists who perform at his club, Muñoz has recorded several albums including Both Sides Now - an album of gorgeous duets with world-renowned bassist Eddie Gomez, who first met Muñoz at Carli’s and Maverick, also with Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette, Don Byron and David Sanchez. Following the recent successful release of his songs and production of Dennis’s Wilson’s POB/Bambu, Carli is recording his first solo rock project featuring his original songs, spanning from 1968 to now and it is being recorded in Nashville for an early next year release.
Legendary bassist Eddie Gomez has been on the cutting edge of music for over four decades. The GRAMMY® winner’s impressive resumé includes performances with jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans (11 years), Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman. Eddie’s distinctive sound and style resonate on hundreds of recordings spanning the worlds of jazz, classical, Latin jazz, rhythm & blues, popular and contemporary music. Gomez’s diverse musical contexts include working with Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Hank Jones, Nancy Wilson, Tania Maria, Ray Barreto, the All Star groups “Steps Ahead” and “New Directions” as well as on GRAMMY®-winning recordings with Chick Corea. Today, Eddie tours and records with his own group which he formed in 1992 with pianist Stefan Karlsson and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb. His recent recording “Duets,” co-led with Carlos Franzetti on piano, won Best Instrumental Album at the 10th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards.
Percussionist Felipe Fournier is a newcomer to the mainstream jazz scene. Nevertheless, his masterful and unique level of performance will undoubtedly place him among the top-ranking percussionists in the world. "I always thought of Felipe Fournier as an explosion about to happen” said Carli Muñoz….“This talented young man swept me with his extraordinary fluidity, sense of communion and melody in his drumming… I believe he is certainly bound to a stay in jazz history.” Muñoz first met Felipe (a Puerto Rico Music Conservatory student from Costa Rica) when he was sent as a sub for a jazz flamenco concert where Muñoz needed a cajón (wood box) player. The chemistry was such that they remained playing duo at Carli's over the years. During this time, they released Volume 3 Live at Carli's - "Art of the Duo." That same year, Felipe was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for Best Jazz Performance on vibraphone with the group “The Turnaround” and has also since released a solo album, "Menos es Mas." Today, he holds a residency job at a music conservatory in Mexico.
"… Virtuosic without being superfluous, Muñoz' playing style matches his writing -- direct, unassuming, and to the point”. John Kelman, All That Jazz
"... A few years ago we discovered the brilliant Marc Copland. Then along came Russ Lossing. And now here's Munoz, a dizzyingly impressive player who sounds in his prime even though no longer in the first flush of youth”. Kevin Le Gendre, Jazz Wise UK
"... You might not expect to hear much in the way of great jazz from a pianist who played keyboards behind the Beach Boys for more than a decade - and who spends much of his energy these days running a restaurant in Puerto Rico. But Carli Munoz is a revelation ". Paul Blair- Hot House NYC, HOT FLASHES.
