 7:15pm ALESH, Congolese

Alesh

Alain Chirwisa (a.k.a. Alesh) delivers potent rhymes aimed at the heart of corruption both in and out of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Darting between sub bass drops and militant rolls of piccolo snares, Alesh deftly crafts thought-provoking lines in French, Swahili, and Lingala. Alesh’s music pays homage to the origins of hip hop, deconstructing political reality in artistic terms. With a degree in economics, this highly intelligent rapper makes astute commentary on his country’s unstable national environment.

The musical voice of the Congolese youth, Alesh has galvanized serious support around the issues of social justice at stake in his country following the turbulent 2011 elections. The numerous honors he has received are a testament to both his musical talents and his social presence. One of many notable examples, Alesh was asked to reopen the air theater in the National Museums of Kinshasa, after the cultural and historical trove of the DRC had been closed for 30 years.

 8:15pm KRISSY KRISSY, Brooklyn NY

Krissy Krissy

When Krissy Krissy was a little girl, she would get behind the pulpit atchurch, hype up the crowd with a lot of Come on everybody! Get your hands up! in a voice soulful beyond her years, and belt out Fred Hammond or Kirk Franklin songs so hard that the veins in her head would bulge, her face would turn red, and the congregation wouldn¹t know what hit them.

Not much has changed since then. When the now 23-year-old pop/rock artist sings, that guttural passion still shows on her face and her audience is still dumbstruck at this little white girl with soul, as she was so oft described. Except today instead of doing it at the church in Brooklyn¹s Bushwick neighborhood that she grew up in, she’s singing it out to millions nationwide via MTV, Logo, iHeartRadio, and YouTube thanks to her summer hit, Dream, the first single from her debut EP, Above All, which is a Freshman Pick on MTVu, a NewNextNow featured video on Logo, and a Top 10 hit on iHeartRadio!
