The Wallace Roney Orchestra
Premiering Wayne Shorters "Universe"
Never before performed works written for Miles Davis

Wayne Shorter is certainly one of the most important composers in the history of this music and arguably the greatest living composer in Jazz today. In what must be one of the grandest musical gestures imaginable, Wayne bestowed on to Wallace Roney the scores to two large scale, large ensemble pieces that Wayne conceived and composed for Miles when he was still in the band but were never recorded (or even performed) and told Wallace he was now the person who could best fully realize these works. These two major works, Legend (composed in 1967) and Universe (composed in 1968 and 69) are amazing in their scope and breadth (they are written for as many as 18 pieces, including english horn, bassoon, french horn, flutes and clarinet along with more traditional instrumentation) and show Wayne to already be a fully formed masterful composer and orchestrator of large scale works at this early date in his career. These compositions represent a major discovery in the canon of one of the greatest composers in the history of jazz and it's is a fitting tribute to Mr. Shorter to debut these important, historical works in celebration of his 80th Birthday in 2013.

Wayne also included a third unrecorded composition, Twin Dragon which was written for Miles in 1981 at his request as he was looking for material to perform for his comeback.
Wallace Roney, who has performed and recorded with Wayne and was Miles Davis' only protege, being mentored by him when he was playing in Tony Williams' band, has become a pivotal artist on the scene in his own right. With his vast experience with these great artists, he is clearly the right choice to bring this important music to life.

VLADA TOMOVA

Vlada Tomova

Honoring tradition while embracing the present, Vlada Tomova's Balkan Tales aims for the heart with earthy sophistication. Called a 'Bulgarian vocal sorceress' and "one of the most exciting voices in the New York global music scene", Brooklyn's exquisite Bulgarian songstress carries haunting, otherworldly energy in her voice. Featuring some of New York's finest instrumentalists, Balkan Tales brings modern soul to the Gypsy Balkan diaspora. Reaching far and wide for its tales, the group's repertoire stretches from Tomova's native Bulgaria to the rest of the Balkans to the Middle East, with flavors of India and Sephardic Spain, recalling Bulgaria's cultural origins shaped by ancient migrations. Music critics have likened Tomova's delicate moans and descant runs to those of Flora Purim. Her 21st century take on the music of her homeland channels the joy that helps keep all great folk traditions alive.

In addition to Balkan Tales, the Bulgarian-born, New York-based Tomova founded and led Yasna Voices, New York's Bulgarian Women's Choir. Her work with the Balkan Beat Box continues to receive international acclaim. Tomova recently  collaborated with Bulgarian kaval virtuoso Theodosii Spassov and innovative American sitarist Chris Rael for a series of concerts in the USA. She completed an album recording of old Sephardic songs with Rael, The Lazarus Rose, to be released in 2013.  Vlada's appearances include Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival (New York), Carnegie's Zankel Hall (New York), Symphony Space (New York), the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Chicago World Music Festival, Toronto's Small World Festival, New York Summer Stage, among many others.

SECRET TRIO

secrettrio

The Secret Trio is made up of three astounding musicians, Ara Dinkjian (oud),Ismail Lumanovski (clarinet) and Tamer Pinarbasi (kanun), who came together to create a new type of chamber music, combining the elements of sound, texture and rhythm with new and interesting approaches to their instruments. Not bound to a single tradition, they perform a collection of original pieces and traditional melodies that fuses the microtonal modes and improvisation of the Middle East, dance beats of the Balkans, and elements of jazz, rock, classical and world music. The delicate harmonies, rapid-fire synchrony and intricate counterpoint developed by the musicians with separate roots in Turkish, Armenian and Macedonian Roma music is an astonishing innovation, full of rhythm and drive. Hear their own compositions along with their innovative renditions of songs by the Beatles, Chopin, Komitas, Duke Ellington and much more!

Oscar Peñas

Oscar Penas

Spanish born, New York based jazz guitarist and composer Oscar Peñas has been performing and recording since the early 2000s when he released two albums on Fresh Sound New Talent, Astronautus and The Return of the Astronautus. Both CDs featured original compositions in the format of an electric quintet.

Peñas’ most consistent output in the recent years has taken place in the trio format with Franco Pinna and Moto Fukushima. The sound palette of the group flows naturally between acoustic and electric textures with the recent and exciting classy addition of violinist Sara Caswell. Guitarist and composer Oscar Peñas epitomizes a new wave of emerging artists who are an integral part of New York’s flourishing music scene, his compositions transcend and yet merge different genres, cultures and styles with fluidity, garce and power. His style has been described at WNYC as “transnational cool”. Although, his music can be called “jazz”, it crosses the boundaries of traditional music labeling, blending the idiom through original compositions with hints of flamenco and South America grooves.

After graduating cum lade from The Berklee College of Music, Oscar returned to Barcelona to hone his chops by performing in Festivals and local jazz venues. In 2005 he returned to the USA to earn his Masters degree in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory where he studied with Danilo Perez and Charlie Banacos among others. After graduation Oscar made New York his home. Since moving to Gotham, Peñas has been engaged in teaching privately and playing in a variety of venues including the BAM Café, Tea Lounge, Bargemusic, Trumpets, Fat Cat, Bar Next Door, Jazz Standard, 55 Bar… with A-list musicians: trumpeters Jason Palmer and Ralph Alessi, saxophonists Dan Blake, Petr Cancura, Uri Gurvich and Javier Vercher, pianists Gil Goldstein and Leo Genovese, and drummers Henry Cole, David Xirgu and Francisco Mela, to name few. He has recently toured in Spain, France and Colombia and performed at the Jazz Plaza in Habana, Cuba's Jazz Festival in December of 2010.

From Now On, released in November 2011 by the artists run label BJUR is his third critically acclaimed recording, and first after settling in the US. The album features the talents of electric six string bassist Moto Fukushima, saxophonist Dan Blake, and percussionist and drummer Richie Barshay. Special guests on the album are Gil Goldstein on accordion and piano along with Franco Pinna on bombo legüero.
