Le Train Bleu Ensemble presents Toy Stories
Music of Adès, Marks, Dillon, and Nathan
LE TRAIN BLEU presents a concert of music inspired by toys and our universal need for play, at DROM, Wednesday, November 7. Four works, including TWO WORLD PREMIERES, explore mankind’s endless variety of play and playthings.
Thomas Adès Living Toys is a wild journey through the fantasies of a child, for 14 instruments. Alternatively delightful and disturbing, it is a brilliant work, already considered a modern masterpiece. The work is inspired by an anonymous tale of childish dreams: “When the men asked him what he wanted to be, the child did not name any of their own occupations, as they had all hoped he would, but replied: ‘I am going to be a hero, and dance with angels and bulls, and fight with bulls and soldiers, and die a hero in outer space, and be buried a hero’. Seeing him standing there, the man felt small, understanding that they were not heroes, and that their lives were less substantial than the dreams which surrounded the child like toys.” anon. (from the Spanish)
Eclectic and outrageous, Matt Marks’ Sex Objects is a set of three songs “featuring unique characters and their intimate relationships with inanimate objects.” (Matt Marks). Vocal performances are by Mary MacKenzie, Matt Marks, and Jeff Gavett. Royce Vavrek’s provocative lyrics are one of the most entertaining features of this riotous work!
Eric Nathan’s Toying is a World Premiere performance. It is a virtuoso exploration of the full range of possible sounds and techniques produced by the trumpet. Played by Le Train Bleu’s own Hugo Moreno, it evokes many aspects of play and recreation. The composer writes: “The piece is for unaccompanied trumpet. I decided ... to take on the challenge writing "duets" or dialogues for solo trumpet, where the trumpet becomes a puppet in dialogue with itself (and in some instances its own mechanics).“
Award-winning New York and North Carolina composer Lawrence Dillon contributes another World Premiere piece to the evening. His Seven Stories is composed for soprano and eight instruments, to an original text . “A stuffed animal falls from an apartment window. As it falls, it looks into each passing window, trying to create a story out of what it sees.” (Lawrence Dillon) The new work, sung by downtown music’s star soprano Mary MacKenzie.
LE TRAIN BLEU is a musical collective formed by conductor and flutist Ransom Wilson. The musicians are among the most exciting young players in New York, and are chosen for their brilliance as well as their expressive qualities. This performance marks the ensemble’s first series concert at DROM. The New York Times said of their debut performance: “Under Mr. Wilson’s baton, the Train Bleu ensemble was both incisive and joyous in execution.” In the 2011-12 season, the ensemble presented a 4-concert series at the Galapagos Art Space and gave its first performance at (le)poisson rouge, as well as collaborating with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in a 2-week season at the Baryzhnikov Arts Center.
Conductor Ransom Wilson has long been recognized as one of the foremost flutists in the world, and is receiving growing praise for his orchestral conducting as well. He is the founder and conductor of Solisti New York Orchestra, as well as the former Artistic Director of Oklahoma's OK MOZART International Festival. He has been guest conductor of many prestigious ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Hallé Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke's, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the New York City Opera. Currently a member of the Music Staff at the Metropolitan Opera, he conducted the THE ACADEMY’s Ensemble ACJW at Lincoln Center in May of 2011.
