A graduate of Curtis Institue and The Juilliard School, Matt's music represents an organic hybrid of Classical, Jazz and World music, as only someone equally versed and experienced in multiple musical styles can do. Having performed with many of the world's top jazz and World musicians, Matt Herskowitz' music has evolved into a unique sound, drawing on all of these influences and filtered through his own musical voice. Mixing formal composition and improvisation, Matt's music explores new and invigorating ways of approaching old forms.

Matt's 2010 release, Jerusalem Trilogy (Justin Time Records), seamlessly fused contemporary jazz and classical styles with a unique blend of Arab and Jewish styles and grooves. His new solo album, Matt Herskowitz Upstairs, has already received critical praise, including being named one of the top five jazz albums of 2012 by Le Devoir in Montreal (the album was released this past October in Canada). Here's what some critics have said about Upstairs so far: "Solo album of the year - Recorded in November 2011 at Upstairs in Montréal, this solo outing of the quebec pianist throws it to our ears. Between original compositions, jazz covers (Brubeck, Petrucciani, Gershwin) and classical arrangements (Bach and Schumann), Herskowitz deploys his art with a rare passion, but without ever sacrificing musicality. Exceptional technique, precise sense of nuance, Herskowitz here brilliantly fuses his mastery of jazz and classical."
-Le Devoir, Montreal

"On this live-off-the-floor recording at Montreal hotspot Upstairs Jazz Bar and Grill, the Juilliard grad jazzes up Bach, gives his own Keith Jarrett spin to a pair of Gershwins, rags Petrucciani, breaths life back into Brubeck and slips in a few of his own panoramic pavanes to complete this almost 70-minute reverie in black and white. For piano and audio enthusiasts this it IT!
-New Canadian Music

"Upstairs finds Herskowitz creating his own personal hybrid with a deep love for classical as well as an artful blend of Michel Petrucciani, Dave Brubeck and George Gershwin, not to leave out J.S. Bach and the romantic lyricism of Robert Schumann. Toss in a few original and one has a solo piano for the ages. "In 2010 Herskowitz recorded Jerusalem Trilogy, where a fusion of contemporary jazz, classical styling and a unique blend of Arab and Jewish styling set the table for a solo "walk-off" home run in Upstairs." Easily 5 stars.

"As a performer Herskowitz displays great command with all the necessary reserve to build convincing musical tension. He has an impressive formula for maintaining a groove through a sweeping arc of dynamics. Volume isn't always necessary in the company of an appreciative crowd of listeners and Herskowitz seizes the opportunity to be as compelling as possible."
-The Jazz Word

"Pianist Matt Herskowitz' new solo concert album, Upstairs, captures a November, 2011 gig at Montreal's popular Upstairs Bar & Grill. It has a similar lyricism and gleam as Fred Hersch's Alone at the Vanguard album from a couple of years ago, albeit with more of a third-stream flavor. It's a mix of nocturnes and energetic, upbeat material imbued with equal parts classical precision and Herskowitz' signature improvisational flair and humor."
-Lucid Culture

"The entire recording underlines Mr. Herskowitz's virtuosity and finesse as a pianist and ranks among his finest works."
-Sounds of Timeless Jazz

"A beautifully captured recording of an intimate live performance by a distinguished performer in varied genres."
-World Jazz News

"Now with the release of Upstairs, the outstanding pianist/composer stands ready to make the next incremental leap in his burgeoning career."
