JANUSZ PRUSINOWSKI TRIO
WILD MUSIC FROM THE HEART OF POLAND
US TOUR, SEPTEMBER 21 - OCTOBER 16

Prusinowski

The Polish Cultural Institute New York proudly presents the American tour of the Janusz Prusinowski Trio, a group of musicians who have learned from village masters of central Poland and who follow in their tradition while at the same time creating their own characteristic modern sound and language of improvisation.

On October 4th, the group will perform at DROM in NYC. The concert is also a part of the NEW YORK EARLY MUSIC CELEBRATION 2013: Pro Musica Polonica, a Service Project of the EARLY MUSIC FOUNDATION, in partnership with the POLISH CULTURAL INSTITUTE NY.

The Trio's unique style is distilled from their informed reinterpretations of central Poland's village music. They bring the mazurka-sung, played, danced, and improvised-to a new, youthful audience. What contemporary quality can be given to archaic and seemingly simple melodies and rhythms without resorting to trendy samples and loops? Listening to the Trio one can hear how traditional Polish folk music echoes or is echoed by a variety of genres: the music of Chopin in its melodic pattern and the use of rubato, a shared love of improvisation with blues and jazz, a tonal sophistication shared with 20th century classical and free improvisation, and the energy and propulsion of rock.

Between 2008 and 2012 the band performed in most European countries, Asia, Canada, and the USA (including Carnegie Hall and Chicago Symphony Center). The band performed with such renowned artists as Janusz Olejniczak, Tomasz Stanko, Michal Urbaniak and Alim Qasimov. They have released two critically-acclaimed albums: Mazurkas (2008) and Heart (2010). In October 2012 the Janusz Prusinowski Trio, was officially selected to perform as part of main showcase of the prestigious world music fair WOMEX 2012 (World Music Expo) in Thessaloniki. 2013 highlights for the band include tours in Germany, Finland, France, Belgium, and Holland. The 2013 US Tour will promote their new album: Knee-Deep in Heaven.

The Prusinowski Trio will appear with two additional members on this tour. The band, no matter how many members ultimately join, calls itself a "trio" in reference to the three-beat meter upon which so much of their music is based. The Prusinowski Trio will perform in following lineup: Janusz Prusinowski, fiddle, voice, Polish accordion; Piotr Piszczatowski, baraban drum, frame drum; Michal Zak, wooden flutes, shawm, clarinet; Piotr Zgorzelski, folk bass, dancing; Szczepan Pospieszalski, trumpet.
