FADO : The SOUL of PORTUGAL
Us Tour and Album release
3 November 2013

Portuguese fado singer Rodrigo Costa Félix performs at DROM on 3 November 2013 in support of his awardwinning CD, Fados de Amor.
Fado-a Portuguese music of love, loss and passion-is enjoying a  global resurgence, spurred on by UNESCO's designation of fado as "World Immaterial and Cultural Patrimony" in 2011.

"The fado has always been an art form that embraces the past and the present, the secular and the spiritual," says Félix.  His music reflects the urban sensibilities of Lisbon, with lyrics and compositions by writers at the vanguard of contemporary fado.
His work has received considerable national and international recognition. Most recently, Portugal's prestigious Amália Rodrigues Foundation awarded Fados de Amor (Fados of Love) "Best CD of the Year," while The Atlantic Monthly called his single "Amigo Aprendiz" one of the 12 best ballads of 2012. His live performances have gained him an enthusiastic following, leading to recent successful tours in Europe and in South America.

Joining Félix are the Portuguese musicians Marta Pereira da Costa, a classically trained virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar, and Pedro Pinhal, a veteran of the classical guitar. Both da Costa and Pinhal accompany Félix on Fados de Amor.

This group has played in Lisbon's most prestigious fado houses and worked with some of the greatest names in the fado, including Celeste Rodrigues, João Braga and Mariza. Also appearing on this date is the Portuguese-American
fado singer Catarina Avelar.

This event is organized by Portuguese/American Cultural Exchange, with support from the Saab-Pedroso Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture at UMass/Lowell; Camões, Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I.P. / CEPE-EUA; and SATA Airlines.
