Perla Batalla

“Onstage, offstage, digital or analog, I love Perla Batalla.”—Leonard Cohen

Grammy nominated vocalist and former Leonard Cohen back-up singer Perla Batalla will return to DROM Thursday, January 8th for one show only. She will perform songs from her CD release, “Bird on the Wire – Songs of Leonard Cohen”. “For me it’s personal,” said Batalla. “Having sung with Leonard for years, his songs feel as though they’ve become part of my make up, his poetic imagery can be at once surgically precise and yet so ambiguous as to be open to unlimited interpretation”

The Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter Perla Batalla was immersed in the musical world from birth; her father, a Mexican singer, her Argentine mother, the proprietor of a bustling Spanish language music store. Perla started her solo career in 1993, after working with artists ranging from Cohen and k.d. lang to the Gipsy Kings and Jennifer Warnes. Batalla joined Cohen as a for his world tour in 1988. Cohen quickly became a mentor to the young Batalla, eventually encouraging her to pursue her own solo career.

Perla’s Sydney Opera House performances (Seen in the Cohen documentary, “I’m Your Man”) have positioned her among the most respected interpreters of Cohen’s work in the U.S. and Europe.

New York Gypsy All-Stars

Nuyorbalkan: New York Gypsy All-Stars Jump the Turnstiles of Balkanalia, Turkish Roots, and Gypsy Soul with Funky Refinement

A Greek bassist ducked into a little bar in New York's Alphabet City and heard the Eastern Mediterranean and Southern Balkans pouring across the packed room. The clarinet was keening and singing, and he knew every tune.

From this blown-away moment of discovery, the New York Gypsy All-Starssprang, uniting bi-musical virtuosi raised on the lush sounds of Macedonian, Greek, Turkish, and American roots and forged in the halls of the world's best music schools. With composerly ears and a madcap relish for ill and crunky sounds, the quintet of crack musicians tears through the tollgates separating the region's interlocking roots on the long-awaited album of original pieces, Romantech (Traditional Crossroads) and on tour in February with concerts in cities including Chicago and NYC.

Calle Sur

Calle Sur is what happens when you combine man and woman, Black and White, urban and rural.   Gorgeous vocals, tight instrumentals, mean rhythms, smooth cadences! This dynamic duo is living proof that the terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” can’t be summarized.
Ed East is Panamanian. His upbringing in Panama City meant noise, hustle, bustle, and those chaotic smells and sights so characteristic of any Third World metropolis. Karin Stein, his Colombian partner, brings to the music of Calle Sur the perspective of her rural upbringing.  Very rural: she grew up as a cowgirl in the eastern Llanos or savannas of Colombia.

Calle Sur effortlessly switches from one Latin style to the next, covering anything from traditional Bolivian panpipe tunes to pop music styles like merengue and bolero.

The duo performs throughout the U.S. and in places far away: Costa Rica, Colombia, Malaysia, Germany, Austria, Romania - wherever their music takes them. They have composed the film score for three CNN documentaries, and one of Karin’s compositions was used in the film “The Air I Breathe,” starring Kevin Bacon,  Brendan Fraser, Andy Garcia, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Emile Hirsch, and Forest Whitaker.
