Meet the Artists:

St. Lucia (DJ Set)

Even in the urban wilds of Brooklyn, there may be no one else like Jean-Philip Grobler, aka St. Lucia. Originally from Johannesberg, St. Lucia grew up performing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. When the choir wasn't traveling - they toured Japan, Australia, Europe and more - they stayed in an enclave tucked in the South African mountains, learning everything from Bach to minimalist opera. A young musician could hardly find better training. But musically, St Lucia's heart lay elsewhere, and South Africa was full of other rhythms. "My mom says I used to sing along to Michael Jackson," he says - an ordinary anecdote, until he adds, "when I was an infant." As a young teenager, he started to feel that he'd had his fill of classical, and it felt like an epiphany when he discovered the direct emotionality of pop. Eventually, he left the creative "small pond" of South Africa for England, where he spent three years studying music in Liverpool. St. Lucia's journey ended - as so many journeys do - in New York City. The atmospheric quality of St. Lucia's electronic pop is powerful, with the musician's global travels and history of secret hideaways effortlessly passed onto the audience through his dreamy, shimmering synths.

Gentei Kaijo (The Lesson)

What do band members behind the likes of DJ Premier, Joey Badass, Lunchmoney Lewis, Run DMC, Demi Lovato, Lauryn Hill and Kimbra do in their free time? When they're not travelling the world, they make music together. Particularly the type that you can dance and sing to. Gentei Kaijo has been performing together for 5 years. They are best known for their Thursday night residency at Arlene's Grocery called "The Lesson". The band incorporates original music and improv with classic hip hop and progressive soul music that you already know and love.

J. Hoard

J. Hoard won a Grammy this year for his contributions to Chance The Rapper's song "No Problem". Throughout his short time on earth, J Hoard has been given opportunities to perform and record with Grammy award artists and producers such as Regina Bell, Tracy Pierce, Richard Smallwood, and many more. His opportunities have mostly come through his background work with gospel artist Rashad McPherson & DivinePURPOSE, his father-Stellar nominated, Ronald Hoard, and alma mater, Berklee College of Music. Moreover, his gift has allowed him to travel to Europe, Canada, and, most recently Puerto Rico. Most importantly, his skills as background member has cultivated his leadership skills as visionary of J. Hoard & The Greenhouse People, a band that formed to popularize a movement into soul pleasing, awakening music whom has now opened for artists such as Dwele.
