Protests in Turkey started on May 31st, when the police responded with unprovoked brutality against a small group of people sitting in at Gezi Park in Taksim, one of the few parks left in Istanbul, to stop it from being demolished and turned into a shopping mall and luxury residences.  The police attacked the protesters at dawn by setting their tents on fire, and using pepper gas, and water cannons.

Millions of Turkish people think their personal liberties have been chipped away gradually… Their demands include ending media censorship, involving citizens in decisions affecting their quality of life, ending police brutality, holding accountable those who were responsible.
