Ben Brody

New Jersey born and now New York City based, Ben Brody is one of the cities’ most progressive and youthful composers in the experimental classical scene. At 27 years old, Brody has kept busy his whole life as a self-taught guitarist turned French horn player, seating him in various ensembles including The Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra of the America, and more. Brody has had 5 orchestral works premiered by The Chelsea Symphony since 2009 and has had other various works performed at venues such as The Kennedy Center, 92Y Tribeca, Brooklyn Bowl, The Tank NYC, Galapagos Art Space, The Cell, Gershwin Hotel, 73 See Art Gallery, and Knox Art Gallery in Harlem. Aside from his own compositions, he has collaborated with artists like Snowmine, Grizzly Bears’ Daniel Rossen, Shara Worden, and even comedian Zach Galifianakis. His influence on modern psychedelic and classical music has been generating buzz through his newest EP Flow State; recently being featured on WNYC’s New Sounds hosted by John Schaefer. Currently Brody is a member of New York City’s leading Hip-Hop Brass Band, PitchBlak Brass Band doubling on French horn and Guitar. Also Brody works working with Oscar winning composer Elliot Goldenthal engraving and organizing scores for future releases. Brody holds degrees from Montclair State University in composition (MA ’12) where he studied with Robert Aldridge and Scott Richards, and Manhattan School of Music (BM ’08) in French horn performance where he studied with Erik Ralske.

Drawing on the spirit of the avant-garde, inflections of minimalism and cutting-edge electro-acoustic techniques, Ergo mines areas of sound unique in modern jazz. With pianist/keyboardist Sam Harris, drummer Shawn Baltazor, and led by Brett Sroka on trombone and computer, the band will release their fourth album, As subtle as tomorrow, with Cuneiform Records in 2014.
