Otan Vargas

Indie rock artist Otan Vargas has been working with producer Johnny April of Staind to release a new EP titled ‘Origins.’ Best known for his acoustic work, Vargas brought in guest musicians for this special production, featuring Richard Mollo on bass guitar, Dom Barranco on drums and percussion, and Cody Bryden of Sakara on electric guitar. The EP is available on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play as of April 14th, 2014.

Vargas tapped into the internet fundraising platform, Indiegogo, to successfully raise the $10K needed for the ‘Origins’ project. The total cost including pre-production, mixing and mastering, and album promotion was completely funded by fans and friends.

Otan Vargas’ appeal is found in his deep gravelly vocals backed by brooding bass lines. This powerfully simplistic combination, layered with candid lyrics, is a style akin to Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Staind. Perhaps Pete Murray (White Noise Owl/Lo-Pro ) describes it best, stating, "Johnny April's sonic mastery of the earth rumbling end of the sonic spectrum creates the perfect backdrop to Otan's haunting, honest, gut wrenching song writing."

The ‘Origins’ tracks feature an organic live-sounding quality, without overdubbing. The eerie rumblings of Otan’s cries in “Cloudless Sky” are riveting in their raw emotion as he declares, “I threw my life away!” This, followed by the warning, “Can’t follow me.”

Otan’s honesty is what has captivated so many of his devoted fans through recent successes such as the 2013 EP, ‘Selected Sorrow.’ The EP contained “Hollow Destination” an aching, lost-soul song featured in the documentary film, Battlefield of the Mind. Produced by Fran Strine (Pantera, Staind, Five Finger Death Punch, Seether) the documentary offered a soundtrack including artists such as Mike Mushok of Staind, Pete Murray of Lo Pro, and many more. Vargas traveled from his New York residence to perform at the Los Angeles Battlefield of the Mind Live Event, sharing the stage with David Ellefson of Megadeth, Troy McLawhorn of Evanescence, Sal G of Staind, Eye Empire, and Lo Pro.

Other success has included Vargas’ 2011 performance alongside Aaron Lewis, Corey Taylor of Slipknot/Stone Sour, Tesla, and Lo-Pro at the It Takes A Community benefit show.
This Filipino born artist received due recognition in 2009 when Staind frontman, Aaron Lewis, discovered Vargas on YouTube covering one of his songs. Lewis later invited Vargas onstage at The Music Box Borgata Hotel and Casinos to perform Staind’s “It’s Been Awhile,” his rendition eliciting a standing ovation from the crowd.
Shortly after, Otan Vargas released his full length debut album, ‘Alone,’ in which “Vargas sings about enduring suffering, battling the voices within, and trying to find a constant peace for his soul” ~ The Silver Tongue, Dec. 2009.
