CEG Presents NY CHiLLHARMONIC ft. Sarah McDonald, Ladies Drink Free

Sara McDonald is an award winning vocalist/composer/french hornist living in Brooklyn New York. While spending the majority of her life globe-trotting with her military family, Sara became heavily involved in the arts. Between piano and french horn lessons, she developed an interest in theater and singing. By the time she reached high school, Sara had already performed in over 30 musicals, and was the lead singer for her schools premiere jazz ensemble.

In the years that followed, Sara developed her musical skill set and went on to study at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music where she studied with the likes of Theo Bleckman, Peter Eldridge, Becca Stevens, Jane Ira Bloom and Ingrid Jensen. By the end of her senior year she was performing all around New York City with her own band and was gaining a lot of traction in the rock-pop/singer-songwriter scenes.

During the summer of 2013 alone, Sara performed in a slew of internationally acclaimed festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Northside Festival and the East Village Music Festival.

In the fall of 2013 Sara headed to Munich, Germany where she recorded her first Big Band Record with the All Jazz Orchestra. Since recording the album, she has gone back to play a tour with the orchestra and develop a strong relationship with the music community in Munich. In February of this year Sara won the prestigious ASCAP Herp Albert Young Jazz Composer Award and by June was invited into the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. This fall she was awarded the ASCAP Phoebe Jacobs prize for her contributions in new jazz music.

On top of all of this, Sara has also performed live on Quebec Radio and was a featured artist on WNYC Soundcheck’s Gig Alerts. While she doesn't necessarily label herself as a “jazz artist” she finds that her music treads on the fringes of indie pop, rock, and jazz; certainly a sound she has curated all on her own.

Apart from live concerts and guest appearances, Sara’s next projects include recording her original works for Large Ensemble and String Quartet, as well as completing her solo album which will also feature all original music.

Born from a love of the great artists of Funk, R&B, Soul, and Jazz, Ladies Drink Free is a collective ensemble that blends a number of influences to create a melting pot of danceable feel good grooves. Formed in the summer of 2011, the band is composed of friends that have been playing together since their middle school days. The deep history among the band’s lineup is the key to their tightness as a group, and rich, layered sound. Ladies Drink Free combines hard grooves, lush keys, and crisp horn licks to create a sonic elixir that combines the essence of old school rare grooves with the sensibilities of modern rock and dance music.
In January of 2013 they released their debut EP, "Sit Down Doggy," which Metropolitan Jolt says, “will have you bumpin up and down in your seat,” and captures the band’s energy, which “shines through their voices and instruments.”
Ladies Drink Free has been making a name for itself with the recent popular resurgence of funk music, playing a number of well-received shows throughout New York. LDF has gained a reputation for its lively performances, which feature a mix of dynamic originals and time-tested classics to keep the crowd moving.
