storyville was the red light district of new orleans from 1897 to 1917, established to regulate prostitution and drugs. though still technically illegal, the vices became tolerated as long as they stayed within the 16 block radius of what was named "the district". the area was soon nicknamed storyville, after councilman sidney story, whose idea storyville had been.

because this is a co-production, we will not be
enforcing as strict a dress code as that for shanghai mermaid, and yet we do very strongly encourage you to dress up! it will be much more fun if you do. come dressed as a sailor, a local
politician, a storyville madame, the chief of police, a famous historical character.
We do ask that you refrain from wearing t-shirts, tennis shoes {and absolutely no baseball caps}. thank you so much!
